"There was no brain power involved here. This just had to work."
" 'Someone has cleaned out your bank account.' I heard these awful words from my accountant," says Jeff Worrell, founder and president of Advantage Medical, a medical supply distributor in Carmel. In the medical-distribution business with a silent partner for several years, Worrell came to work one Friday to learn that his partner had decided to close up shop without any warning. Left with heavy debt and angry clients, Worrell opted to start a new business and honor his commitments rather than declare bankruptcy.
Hence, Advantage Medical was born as a one-man show run from Worrell's basement. "I needed money quickly," he recalls. Worrell loaded up his stock into his car and started driving around, visiting one physical-therapy office at a time. "I actually made a sale that first day," he recalls.
From there, he hired two employees, who made office calls and in-person deliveries-doing whatever it took to carve out a steady clientele. Within one year, Worrell and his crew had succeeded. And today, Advantage Medical operates from an 18,000square-foot building that Worrell bought to house the company.
A good rebound from the day his partner ripped him off? That's an understatement.
